sql database corrupted - roll back to recent backup?

$

Good day.

It appears my SQL database 'protect' has become corrupted and the SQL Express server basically bombs the machine. so I can't do anything without booting into safe mode. As it happens, I have an auto-generated backup from 1/28. What's the best/easiest way to roll back to this version of the database?

Error: ST Remote Scheduler Service Is Marked As An Interactive Service

$
0
0

Purpose

The purpose of this document is to address an Interactive Service error showing up in Windows logging relating to the ST Remote Scheduler Service (STSchedEx).

Symptoms

Customers running newer operating systems may see the following error in the Windows System event log:

The ST Remote Scheduler Service service is marked as an interactive service.  However, the system is configured to not allow interactive services.  This service may not function properly.

Cause

The error is due to the fact that some patches require the Scheduler to run as an interactive service to properly to execute the patch.  On systems that do not allow interactive services, this can cause a minor monitoring/reporting issue since the error shows in the System event log, but the scheduler will execute as normal.

Resolution

If your monitoring system is flagging this error as an issue, you'll need to configure your software to whitelist or ignore this error.  It's a false positive since it doesn't actually cause any problems.

I have up to 70 machines in Ivanti Patch for windows which are randomly stopping with communicating. The error on the client is "An error occurred reading the policy" I'm not able to do a check in request from the server "Agent didn't respond" but i can ping the machine. If i choose for reinstall with policy i am able to communicate with the machine. but after a while (up to some days) the machines are stopping with the error  "An error occurred reading the policy"

it seems that this issue is since the upgrade to 9.3 (4510)

i'm running on the latest versions and Server 2012R2 as OS.

Any ideas?

I would like for you folks to show me where I can review patches that are going to be deployed before Patch Tuesday.

Results monitor for automated tasks?

$

I'm setting up agent-based scanning and deployments including the use of a distribution server etc. If I run manual tasks, executing a scan/deploy on a desired machine group, I can see those results in the results screen and can click on them for summary/results information. However, anything I automate under an agent policy to run say, every hour, doesn't show up anywhere.

Surely this stuff is tracked somewhere so that I can view the history and results of all of the scheduled tasks that are running?

Patching job does not start

Hello all,

Had a manually scheduled job in my schedule. It was supposed to start at 12:30 AM on a certain date. It did not start and shows nothing in the tracker. It is also out of the schedule.

Two questions: Could this be caused if my primary hard drive on the server running the console was very low on disk space?

Secondly, where do I go to see what happened to the job?? A log??

Thanks.

How To: Completely Remove an Agent and All of Its Components

$
0
0

Purpose

This article provides steps to completely remove all components of the Protect/Patch for Windows Servers (PWS) agent from a client system and then perform a clean re-installation of the agent.

Do not perform these steps on your Protect / PWS console machine.

Resolution

To uninstall and then reinstall the agent:

  1. Uninstall the Shavlik Protect/Ivanti PWS Agent and its components from Add/Remove Programs or Programs & Features in the Windows Control Panel.
  2. Delete the ProgramData folder: C:\ProgramData\LANDesk\Shavlik Technologies
  3. Delete the C:\Program Files\LANDesk\Shavlik Protect Agentfolder

For 64bit machines, ensure to add(x86)to the path.

  1. Delete the relevant certificates.

    To delete certificates:
    1. ClickStart>Run, type mmc, and clickOK. The MMC Snap In window opens.
    2. ClickFile>Add/Remove Snap-In.
    3. Under Available Snap Ins, selectCertificates.
    4. ClickAdd.
    5. Select theComputer Accountoption and clickNext.
    6. Ensure that theLocal Computeroption is selected and then clickFinish.
    7. Close the Add or Remove Snap Ins window.
You should now see Certificates listed under Console Root.
    8. Expand Certificates.
    9. Delete these certificates that are listed as being issued by ST Root Authority:
      • Personal\Certificates
      • Trusted Root Certification Authorities\Certificates
      • Intermediate Certification Authorities\Certificates
    10. Close the window.
  2. Verify that the agent machine keys are removed.

The machine keys are located at C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\MachineKeys

You can open these files using a text editor, such as notepad, and then use CTRL+F to search for the words console and agent in each of these files.

If any of the files have the word console or agent in plain text, delete the file. Do not delete any files that do not contain these words in plain text.

Do not delete any certificates or files in theCrypto\RSA\MachineKeysfolder that you are not sure about. If you have any questions, contact Shavlik Support.

It is highly recommended to perform a backup of the registry before performing any modifications.

How to back up Windows Registry: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Back-up-the-registry

  1. Open regedit and navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\UpgradeCodes\

Upgrading Console and Distribution Points

We are preparing to upgrade our Shavlik Console from 9.2 to Ivanti 9.3. I've read the upgrade guide which states after the upgrade, we should sync our distribution points. Do we have also need to update the Shavlik software on the Distribution points as well?

Patching Roles with Local Admin

Is there anyway to allow a user to administrate Ivanti Protect, via roles, without being a local admin on the server?

We are currently held to DISA/NIST standards, so we're very hesitant to simply begin adding our admins as local admins on the Ivanti machine.

I would like a report showing all my workstations and the last time they were scanned

What I am after is close to the built in detailed summary report but not exactly. That report shows by scan. I just want to see each workstation and the last time it was scanned and its patch disposition at that time. I looked through all the built in and did not see how to manipulate them to get what I need. Thank you,

Object reference not set to an instance of an object

Hello,

I’m trying to move my Ivanti console from one server (W2K8R2 STD) to another server (W2K16STD) but I always get the same error : Object reference not set to an instance of an object

Steps I did :

  • Attached/detached my DB from SQL2005 to SQL2016 - SP1 – CU5 (13.0.4451.0)
  • Changed the DB location with “Database setup tool” to this new SQL server

on the old server : (UserID with Admin rights on the server)

  • Upgrade my Shavlik console from 9.1.xxx to IvantiPatchForServers_9.3.4510
  • Backup Core settings
  • Backup User settings

on the new server : (The same userid)

  • Installed IvantiPatchForServers_9.3.4510
  • The installation also installed SQL Express
  • Created a local DB for the new installation of Ivanti Console
  • Copied the Backup files from the old server to the new server
  • Tried to Restore the Core settings but it always fails with the same error

How To Move Your Database To Another SQL Server

$
0
0

Purpose

This article provides steps to migrate an existing database for Shavlik Protect another SQL server.

Note: Before migration, ensure that Microsoft SQL Management Studio is installed on both the current database server and the destination database server. Also, ensure that no user is currently logged in to the Protect console. If you do not yet have SQL Server Management Studio, you can obtain the express editions with the links in this document: http://community.shavlik.com/docs/DOC-23132.

To migrate the database to another SQL server:

  1. Open SQL Management Studio on the current database server.
  2. Expand the Databases folder and locate your Protect database.

Note: To find the file path, in SQL Management Studio, right-click the database and click Properties. Then click on Files and scroll to the right.

   3.  Right-click the Protect database and click Detach, then choose drop then click ok.

DetactchDB.PNG

   4.  Browse to the directory where the database files are stored on the server, databasename.mdf and databasename.ldf and then copy them.

MDF_LDF.PNG

   5.  Place the files on the new server in the location of your choice.

   6.  Open SQL Management Studio on the destination machine and log in to the database engine.

   7.  Right-click the Databases folder and click Attach

Attaching.PNG

   8.  In the Databases to attach window, click Add and point it to the databasename.mdf file you copied to the server.

You should now be able to see the MDF and LDF files in the bottom pane.

AttachDB.PNG

   9.  Link the database to the Protect installation.

To link the database to the Protect installation:

  1. Log in to your Protect console machine.
  2. Click Start> All Programs> Shavlik Protect.
  3. Select Database setup tool.
  4. Select the Use an existing database option and click Next.
  5. Select the server name of the new database server.
  6. In the Database Name dropdown, select your Protect database.
  7. Choose the credentials that the Protect console should use to connect to the database.
  8. Click Test database connection.
  9. If the test is successful, click Next.
  10. The console should now be attached to this database and Protect is ready for use.

Cannot see patches after a scan

I'm probably being stupid here, but when I used to scan servers I used to be able to see what patches were missing and choose which ones to install. I seem to have lost the ability to do this.

I just get a grey screen as per screenshot. Tried the usual things, reboot the server, close Ivanti etc. Nothing seems to work. Any ideas?

Cheers

Shavlik Patch and Patching in Workgroup

We have a server that was joined to our domain but we have now moved it to our DMZ and set it to workgroup instead of domain member.  When we try to scan getting error 261; we confirmed that the required ports are open.  Is there by chance a known issue with having servers joined to a domain but then set to work group having problems with being patched by Shavlik?

Protect 9.3 - Patch Distribution to Offline Shavlik Consoles?

$

Hello all!

I'm going through and trying to figure out the best setup for the way our machines are. We have one Shavlik console that has internet access, and that will have to distribute patches to another domain with 5 offline consoles. What is the recommended way to set this up?

I have the following thoughts or questions about this, so if you can help answer them that would be appreciated!

  1. Distribution Servers Tab
    1. Online Console
      1. On the online console, setup a distribution server to the offline share in the other domain?
      2. After this distribution server is set, we would schedule automatic synchronization, so that the online server would sync patches with the offline share?
    2. All offline consoles
      1. All offline consoles need this same distribution set on their end right?
      2. Do I need to set automatic synchronization here? Or is this handled with the downloads portion?
  2. Downloads Tab
    1. Offline Consoles
      1. With Distribution Servers set, I presume my download source for the offline servers now becomes the distribution server right?
      2. Do I need a scheduled automatic download schedule set here?

I guess my main question is, is any of this done automatically? Or is it based off of all of the schedules? If I scan a machine at site A, will it connect to the distribution server to acquire the patch first?

Thanks!
