How To: Completely Remove an Agent and All of Its Components

$

0

Purpose

This article provides steps to completely remove all components of the Protect/Patch for Windows Servers (PWS) agent from a client system and then perform a clean re-installation of the agent.

Do not perform these steps on your Protect / PWS console machine.

Resolution

To uninstall and then reinstall the agent:

  1. Uninstall the Shavlik Protect/Ivanti PWS Agent and its components from Add/Remove Programs or Programs & Features in the Windows Control Panel.
  2. Delete the ProgramData/App Data folders:
    • Vista & Newer –C:\ProgramData\LANDesk\Shavlik Technologies
    • XP/2003 –C:\Documents & Settings\All Users\Application Data\LANDesk\Shavlik Technologies
  3. Delete the C:\Program Files\LANDesk\Shavlik Protect Agentfolder

For 64bit machines, ensure to add(x86)to the path.

  1. Delete the relevant certificates.

    To delete certificates:
    1. ClickStart>Run, type mmc, and clickOK. The MMC Snap In window opens.
    2. ClickFile>Add/Remove Snap-In.
    3. Under Available Snap Ins, selectCertificates.
    4. ClickAdd.
    5. Select theComputer Accountoption and clickNext.
    6. Ensure that theLocal Computeroption is selected and then clickFinish.
    7. Close the Add or Remove Snap Ins window.
You should now see Certificates listed under Console Root.
    8. Expand Certificates.
    9. Delete these certificates that are listed as being issued by ST Root Authority:
      • Personal\Certificates
      • Trusted Root Certification Authorities\Certificates
      • Intermediate Certification Authorities\Certificates
    10. Close the window.
  2. Verify that the agent machine keys are removed.

The machine keys are located at:

Windows 2008, 2008 R2, Vista, and 7 –C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\MachineKeys
Windows 2003, 2003 R2, and XP –C:\Documents & Settings\All Users\Application Data\ Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\MachineKeys

You can open these files using a text editor, such as notepad, and then use CTRL+F to search for the wordsconsole andagent in each of these files.

If any of the files have the wordconsole oragentin plain text, delete the file. Do not delete any files that do not contain these words in plain text.

Do not delete any certificates or files in theCrypto\RSA\MachineKeysfolder that you are not sure about. If you have any questions, contact Shavlik Support.

It is highly recommended to perform a backup of the registry before performing any modifications.

How To: Clean Up Your Patch Repository Using ITscripts

$
0
0

Purpose

This document will show you how to run/schedule the "Console Clean Up" ITScript to clean up your Patch Repository

The Patch Repository location is the path listed under "Patch download directory" in the Downloads tab under Tools > Operations (Tools > Options in 9.3)

The default location is C:\ProgramData\LANDesk\Shavlik Protect\Console\Patches

Symptoms

Your patch repository is taking up too much storage space storing old patches you no longer need

Steps

Go to Manage > ITScripts, and when it is done updating, close the pop-up if it did not close automatically

Under the "Maintenance" category, highlight "Console Clean Up" and click "Approve"

ConsoleCleanUp.PNG

Then go to Tools > "Run console ITScripts"

RunConsoleScript.PNG

The values listed are in Days (the default value for both is 180 days) - if you want to modify a value, double-click on the parameter you want to change (patchAge/deploymentAge) and enter the desired value

*NOTE - The patchAge value references how long ago the local patch file was downloaded/created (Date created), not the date the patch was originally published by the vendor (Date modified), so you may still see files with old dates under "Date modified" after running the script

When finished, press "Continue" to proceed to the scheduling options

RunScript2.PNG

Click "Run" to run immediately, or select the scheduling options you want and click "Schedule" (the "Run" button changes to "Schedule" when you select scheduling options)

RunScript.PNG

Deploying software using custom xml - msi install

Hello.  I used the custom patch editor to add a jabbersetup.msi file that I want to distribute and install on our workstations.   I put /quiet in as the install file command line switches.   I scan for the software and then attempt to deploy to the missing workstations.  I see the software pushed to the workstation but it stays in the Executing status.     I see in the log on the workstation that it attempted to run jabbersetup.msi /quiet but nothing happens.  Do I need to deploy this a different way?

Object reference not set to an instance of an object

Hello,

I’m trying to move my Ivanti console from one server (W2K8R2 STD) to another server (W2K16STD) but I always get the same error : Object reference not set to an instance of an object

Steps I did :

  • Attached/detached my DB from SQL2005 to SQL2016 - SP1 – CU5 (13.0.4451.0)
  • Changed the DB location with “Database setup tool” to this new SQL server

on the old server : (UserID with Admin rights on the server)

  • Upgrade my Shavlik console from 9.1.xxx to IvantiPatchForServers_9.3.4510
  • Backup Core settings
  • Backup User settings

on the new server : (The same userid)

  • Installed IvantiPatchForServers_9.3.4510
  • The installation also installed SQL Express
  • Created a local DB for the new installation of Ivanti Console
  • Copied the Backup files from the old server to the new server
  • Tried to Restore the Core settings but it always fails with the same error

Shavlik and Machine Group frustrations

$
0
0

This post is related to Shavlik Patch for Windows / Shavlk Protect, version 9.4.

When viewing a machine by using View - Machines, we've noticed that a few things happen:

1) A machine will only show up in it's appropriate machine group if it has been scanned since it was added to that machine group.

2) A machine that sits in multiple machine groups will only appear in the list once, and will only indicate it is part of the most recent machine group that was scanned.

Combined, this means I have no reliable way to determine what machine groups (plural) a machine belongs to. I have to review each machine group. I said to my coworker I must be missing something, this can't possibly by the primary search mechanism as this by itself is unreliable and provides no way of determining what groups a machine is in. Having to scan a machine in order for it to be shown in the results is also very odd. If I'm using this tool as my patch/inventory management tool I need to know where my machines are sitting in real-time, regardless of scans run.

So... before I go any further, do I have this right and if so, is everyone just 'dealing' with this?

Or...

Do I have this wrong and there are in fact other ways of searching your machines for machine group information?

501 Error code

Hello --

I am encountering the 501 error code when trying to do a scan on a Windows 10 system. The system in question has been updated

to the Windows 10 version 1709 release. I have confirmed the Windows Defender firewall is allowing port inbound connections through

the 5120 port, and the Remote Registry Service is running and on Automatic.

Additionally, I have gone into the Registry itself, and modified the Disabled setting for the RegistryIdle to 1. None of the steps that I have

taken have solved the problem. What other measures do I need to take?

Thanks.

How to export patches deployed in specific timeframe ?

$

Hi all,

So the task is this : i need to export all patches installed by Shavlik on server X in a specific time frame (for ex : 1July - 1Dec) . Sounds easy but i can.t have the report that i want . Tried all custom reports /Condensed Patch Listing / advanced filters....but i don.t get the result i need.

Of course i could use things like :

wmic qfe list full /format:htable > hotfixes.htm  or get-hotfix  - but this doesn.t report updates for office/exchange etc and i deployed with Shavlik a lot of updates for different applications.

Or i could just go to Control Pannel and manually get the installed updates but there are not present updates for Vmtools/Firefox / etc that i normally did with shavlik.

So my only hope is that Shavlik can acutally do a report like this, it sounds super easy should definitelly be available.

Thus, can it be done ?

Anothing thing : i could just view in the Results tab in shavlik and manually check previous deployments...but the problem is that i can only see them from the last  month. Any way to see the previous deployments from the last 6 months ?

Super urgent help needed here, i.m in the middle of an audit and need this to be done.

Thanks in advance.

Alex.

server not found message at startup

When I first launch Shavlik Protect 9.3 i get a pop up window in the lower right corner of my monitor saying a particular server was not found.  The server it mentions did exist at one time but the server name was changed.  For some reason the Shavlik app still thinks the server's old name exists somewhere.  Is there anyway to stop this?

Thanks

Patch Scan Template to Scan for 1 Missing Patch

I created a Patch Scan Template to scan for a Baseline that includes a single patch in a Patch Group.   The results of the scan however show all missing patches.         I want to find a way to scan all workstations for this missing patch and then deploy only that patch to all workstations missing it.   How do I easily do this?

How To: Use Machine Group Search to find machines and their associated Machine Groups in Patch for Windows Servers 9.3

Purpose

The purpose of this document is to show how to use the Machine Group search feature to find which machine groups a machine is associated with.

Description

  • To search through machine groups for a specific machine, start by right-clicking any machine group name in the left navigation pane. Click on 'Search Machine Groups'.

  • In the Search Machine Groups window, you can type in the machine name that you're looking for. The search will automatically display the results of the search.

  • You can highlight one or more line items to enable additional options such as, removing the machine from the group, including or excluding them from the group, or edit the source machine group.

Custom Report including CVE

Hi,

I've been trying to write a custom report in the SQL Server back-end (starting from your Patch Status Detail example).  I've added a few new fields from reference tables but I am having a lot of trouble getting Reporting.Cve to join properly with Reporting.PatchAppliesTo.  It seems to be producing some quasi-Cartesian product and pulling in CVE's that do not have anything to do with Windows O/S products.  Do you already have a variation of the Patch Status Detail Report that includes the CVE?

Thanks in advance ...

Application shutdown

Hi, could anyone recommend a way to patch multiple servers that hold one application in the correct order?

Ideally what I'd like to do:

1 - stop application services across multiple servers

2 - patch application & database servers

3 - reboot database server first & ensure its back on line (pre 4)

4 - reboot application servers.

Any ideas would be greatly welcome.  I believe I can achieve step 1 with the use of a Powershell script (though I can currently only get it to work if each server is running its own individual script) but I can't see a way to reboot/patch the servers in a particular order.

Thanks,

Lynette.

Scanning recommendations

Hi,

I currently have servers manually added into multiple machine groups for scanning & patching purposes.  I'd like ensure that all servers on the domain/network are included in these - or identify any that are missing.  Does anyone have any recommendations/experience of using a domain name/IP address based scan to do this?

Thanks in advance.

patch calendar

Hi,

Is there any way to produce a calendar of what is getting patched & when out of Protect?  Ideally something that can also be scheduled to produce this every month.

Ideally if it could also contain the asset names it would be great.

Thanks for any advise.@

Scheduled automatic downloads Twice + Exclude some SP in scan

Hello,

I implement rings for patching and has to disable automatic updates and create a scheduled automatic download task in the Options to update the definitions and download the patchs using the Predictive patch downloads feature. I would like to run the Scheduled automatic downloads task more than one (i.e. first and thirt monday of the month) but I could only create one schedule for the task, If I click on the add button to create a schedule it replace the schedule of the active task. For now I have to use the Microsoft scheduler and create multiple trigger of the tasks. I was wondering if there is Qan easier solution to do it.

Secondly I would like to exclude some Services Packs in the scan. I can see the Service Pack 1709 for Windows 10 missing but I don't want to install it now, is there any way to exclude it from the scan like a patch ?

Thanks in advance for any help

Best regards

Gabriel
